How does Functional Medicine differ from Traditional Medicine?

Functional medicine is a systems-based approach that focuses on individualizing care to understand better how genetics, environment, and lifestyle can affect a person’s health. The body is viewed as an interconnected system, where issues in one area can impact another part of the body (for example, gut dysfunction can affect mood, hormones, and immunity).

Sometimes called root-cause medicine, functional medicine strives to answer why the issue developed in the first place, rather than just treating the symptoms. The patient is considered an active participant in the healing process, working closely with their doctor to implement changes in nutrition, lifestyle, stress management, and other long-term adjustments.

Functional medicine uses both conventional diagnostics (labs, imaging) and advanced or specialized testing (hormone panels, microbiome tests, nutrient levels). Treatments can include medication, but also emphasize diet, exercise, sleep, supplements, and mind-body practices.

Traditional medicine treats the disease.

Functional medicine treats the person who has the disease.

Functional medicine costs more because it invests more — more time, more testing, and more personalization — to uncover and address the root causes of illness rather than just manage symptoms.

Who We Care For
